In the year of the 2020 European elections, this design project places the stars of the European Union at the heart of a visual exploration of freedom, democracy, and European identity.

The twelve golden stars – traditionally a symbol of unity and cohesion – are geometrically deconstructed, fragmented, and reassembled. From this graphic deconstruction emerges a new visual language: one that does not signify disintegration, but rather movement, change, and the power of diversity. In a time of political tension and growing polarization, the project makes a visual statement in support of Europe’s core values – as a reminder, a stimulus, and a call to actively shape the future of the EU.

Concept & Inspiration

The starting point of the project was an exploration of the European Union’s iconic symbol: the circle of twelve stars. To be more precise: one star. Through an ideation phase, this static and heavily charged emblem was first formally deconstructed – and based on the famous origami folding technique I build up three new Symbols that are currently hot topics for the EU. The result was a modular visual system that no longer sees the stars as rigid forms and has a secret hidden message – building blocks for new narratives.

The creative focus was not on fragmentation as destruction, but as evolution. The design seeks a balance between clarity and motion, between structure and openness. The resulting visuals convey an abstract yet powerful message: freedom is not a given – it is continually re-created through the interaction of many parts, perspectives, and voices. Especially in the context of the 2024 European elections, this visual language becomes an invitation: to participate, to co-create, and to take responsibility.

Apparell Design

To carry the message beyond the context of exhibitions or posters, the developed motif was also applied to T-shirts, bags, and other print media. As wearable design, the abstract star system becomes a personal statement – visible in everyday life, on the street, in public spaces. In this way, the design is not only communicated, but lived: as a quiet yet clear symbol for a free, open Europe.
